Combat Signs of Aging with Exercise

We all know that exercise is key to staying healthy and fit. But sometimes it’s just too hard to fit an exercise routine into our busy lives. Research has shown, however, that even 30 minutes of continuous moderate aerobic exercise three or more times a week can significantly improve health and even combat wrinkles and other signs of aging.

There are several reasons exercise is so effective at increasing a person’s lifespan and preventing signs of aging. Exercise increases the flow of blood and oxygen, aiding with cellular damage control and moving detrimental toxins through the body at a quicker rate. With the proper amount of nutrients and oxygen reaching each cell, the body is able to efficiently repair any damage that may lead to structural breakdown if left unattended and thereby weaken the skin and body, making them more susceptible to signs of aging.

Exercise also helps tone muscles and decrease excess fatty deposits. As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down, allowing for an increased buildup of fat. Exercise burns off that excess fat while toning the muscles, keeping skin tighter and less prone to sagging. This is particularly noticeable in the skin under our arms and around the stomach and rear.

Another benefit exercise has in the fight against aging is its ability to elevate a person’s mood and relieve stress. Stress is frequently cited as a leading cause of premature aging. Virtually everyone has heard someone say that stress and worry is causing them gray hair. This is not entirely an over exaggerated statement. Stress does impact our body’s ability to function optimally, taking energy and resources from repair processes and other functions that maintain the integrity of our cell structures. Stress can also cause our bodies to react with increased hormone production and even lead to unhealthy sleeping habits. Excess stress can show up on our skin as blemishes, wrinkles, and dark circles around the eyes.

Exercise counteracts the effects of stress by releasing endorphins, refocusing your mind, and increasing self-confidence. All of this contributes to a person’s overall health and helps keep the body in top condition to fight damage and signs of aging.
